Redis Clone
9th September, 2026
Over time I have taken an interest in competitive programming, which led me to C++, since it is more or less the standard language in that world. The more I learnt it and the more I used it, the more I came to like the low-level control it gives you. That made me want to try C++ outside of contest problems, so I wrote a clone of the in-memory key-value store that needs no introduction - Redis. The original is written in C in a procedural style, while my version tries to reproduce the main functionality in C++ with a mix of procedural and object-oriented code.
I say a mix because I am not convinced that OOP is the right abstraction for everything, especially after taking a small dive into functional programming through 'Functional Programming in Scala' by Paul Chiusano and RĂșnar Bjarnason. That said, I did appreciate the encapsulation C++ gives you, and the standard library.
This is the first project I have written at this kind of networking and low level, and I have to admit it was genuinely exciting to work on. It is the direction I hope to keep going in, assuming functional programming does not distract me first.
